Ann Arbor Public Schools This section of the archive contains materials relating to the desegregation of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. There has been only one majority African American school in the history of the Ann Arbor school system, and that school was Jones Elementary School. In 1965 Jones School was closed, and the building later became Community High School. Much of the material in this section relates to the closing of Jones School, and the Ann Arbor community's reaction to the closing. The Ann Arbor community has always had a keen interest in education. In our research we discovered how much Ann Arbor citizens value education.
This information was found in the January 22, 1958 issue of the Ann Arbor News, however we have not found any other information on this 'test case'. Most of the material in is section came from the archives of the Ann Arbor Public Schools. We wish to thank the Ann Arbor Public Schools for allowing access to their achive. Special Request for School District Change The school year 1954-55 was the first time Ann Arbor schools had school districts. This is the form used if parents wanted their children to attend a school outside their district. In the future school districts will play an important part in school segregation. Letter from the Conference on Religion and Race This letter urged the Ann Arbor School Board to hire African American Teachers in 1964. The material in this section of the archive includes Board minutes, citizens' letters, and committee reports regarding the closing of Jones School. On June 19, 1963 the Ann Arbor Board of Education made the following resolution:
Jones school, now Community High School, was the African American school in Ann Arbor. The closing of Jones School in 1965 was the first major act of the Ann Arbor Board of Education to reduce segregation in city schools. The closing of Jones School in September, 1965 had the effect of reducing school segregation in the Ann Arbor Schools. Liberals and blacks in the community hailed the closing of Jones School as a success, however not all were happy with the closing. The letters to the Board in this section reflect community reaction to the closing.
