These paintings were made tens of thousands of years ago on the walls of caves in what is now France. The paintings in the Cave of Lascaux rely heavily on ochres as a source of color. Some of the pigments were heated to produce darker colors, while others were mined exactly as they are seen in these images. The book can be found here.
