Wafaa Bilal's interactive installation of unadorned shelves of white, blank books ultimately invites visitors to contribute toward the purchase of books for Iraqi institutions whose collections suffered in the aftermath of the 2003 US-led invasion. As contributions are received, the white books are replaced with those purchased, and donors are invited to take one of the blank volumes. This image is from the 2016 installation at Esker Foundation, curated by Srimoyee Mitra. The exhibition was organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Windsor. The interactive installation has since travelled to the Arab American National Museum, Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, Confederation Centre of the Arts, New Orleans Museum of Art, and House of Wisdom in Sharjah.
