Artists' Books

The artists' books in this exhibit have a variety of structures and forms, from more traditional appearing books, to miniature clocks and interactive pop-outs. This exhibition was created to provide an alternative way to experience the collection and to showcase the diversity and depth of materials in the collection.

Macy Chadwick

Macy Chadwick is a California-based artist. In her work, she attempts to depict the themes of memory, communication, and visual language systems. The Topography of Home is a visual reconciliation of trying to live in the present while longing for her hometown.

Ann Lovett

Ann Lovett is a New York-based artist. She has exhibited her work in national and international collections. In addition to creating artists' books, Lovett creates photographic and photo-encaustic works. Her book Relation is a sculptural work consisting of shifting and interlocking texts.

Bea Nettles

Bea Nettles creates both artists' books and photographic works. Her creations often include text, juxtapose multiple multiple images, or utilize alternative processes. Much of her work is autobiographical. Aging Gracefully captures the life of Nettle's mother, featuring each decade reflected in a mirror.

Lisa Olson

Lisa Olson attended the University of Michigan for both her bachelor’s degree in microbiology and her MFA in mixed media. Her works seeks to capture the invisible and tenuous aspects of human life. Three other works created by Olson are also included in the AAEL Special Collection.

Keith Smith

Keith Smith has created over 150 unique artists' books. He has also taught at the Visual Studies Workshop. In addition to artists' books, Smith creates poetry, dictionaries, and instructional texts on bookmaking.

Lori Spencer

Lori Spencer is a Philadelphia-based printmaker and book artist. Spencer is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director at the University of the Arts. In her work, she seeks to juxtapose images and text to build a dialogue of accumulated senses and references.

Melinda Yale

Melinda Yale’s work seeks to comment on how people react to the anxieties of the world around them. She uses humor, illustration, and comics to depict these connections. Yale is a New York-based artist.

Liz Zanis is a New York-based artist who has a degree in illustration. Her prints and book arts seek to literally describe anecdotes and draw attention to patterns and moments that often go unnoticed.

Philip Zimmermann

Philip Zimmerman is an artist who works primarily in artists’ books. Long Story Short is semi-autobiographical that attempts to tell a story through cliches. The work features hands as a connecting theme. All of the images in the work are gathered from magazines published when Zimmerman was growing up. One additional work created by Zimmermann is also included in the AAEL Special Collection.
