Description
Collaboratively created and performed by Beynji Marshall, Rachel Fernandes, Chelsea Hamm, Ellen Wallace, and Amy Wensley, "NYDIA" draws inspiration from the narrative behind a statue in the University of Michigan Museum of Art ("Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii," by Randolph Rogers). With the utilization of light against a scrim constructed of plastic bags ironed together, we envelop the audience in a reflection of our anxieties about plastic waste. Conceptualized as a whole by the team, the recurring physical theme of closed eyes (alluding to blindness) while one hand raises to an ear, refers to the way we use these everyday objects - plastic bags - without a second thought. In this work, "NYDIA," is here to stimulate conversation about the urgent need to recycle and reduce the use of plastic materials.
