- Description
- Our work is an exploration of the themes of time, space, and light through the Lurie Tower Building (North Campus bell tower).
With the Bicentennial as our starting point, we initiated discussions over the event’s significance. We came to realize that the Bicentennial is essentially a marker of time -- after a careful selection process, we gravitated strongly towards the North Campus bell tower, in order to play upon this theme. As we discussed the building itself, the second theme of space arose, and we sought to explore the interactions between the two: how the space both stands as a symbol of time, as well as a significant landmark of the University of Michigan North Campus.
As the bells’ sounds skip from one note to another, images representative of space from the inside of the tower are projected onto its walls, shifting to the music. Time and space meld together within the projection’s lighting, being and becoming a part of the greater whole, just like the multitude of majors within the artist group, all working together to celebrate the school's continuing legacy. - Relation
