The Regents of the University of Michigan gratefully acknowledge the extraordinary contributions of Mary Ann Swain, and in particular express their appreciation for her service as interim vice president for student services.

When she was called upon early in 1990 to assume the leadership of the 20 units that comprise student services, while retaining her position as associate vice president for academic affairs, Vice President Swain willingly accepted the challenge. In her 22 months as interim vice president, she played a critical role in the evaluation and reorganization of the student services area while also serving on the search committee that developed the job description and screened candidates for the permanent vice president position. All the while, she oversaw important new initiatives and built and maintained the confidence of the student services team. Now that her permanent successor has been identifed, Vice President Swain will have the luxury of being able to turn her full attention to her broad-ranging work in academic affairs.

In expressing their gratitude to Vice President Swain, the Regents echo the comments made by President Duderstadt earlier this year, as the search for her permanent replacement got underway: "The University owes a great debt of thanks to Dr. Swain, who voluntarily took on additional responsibilities as interim vice-president for student services. I personally appreciate deeply Mary Ann's volunteering to fill two jobs during this period She has set an example of devotion to the University that all of us admire."
