Biography/Memoir

The Regents of the University of Michigan wish to extend their gratitude and best wishes to Vice President Henry Johnson as he begins yet another phase of his service to the University as a senior consultant with the Alumni Association.

Henry Johnson came to the University of Michigan in 1970 as associate director of the Program for Educational Opportunity in the School of Education, after having pursued his professional interests as a psychiatric-social worker for ten years in Indiana, Kansas, and Michigan. He was appointed vice president for student services in 1972. In this position, he developed his unique management style, characterized by an unusual compassion and understanding for the students who were the primary beneficiaries of his services. It was through this work also that he became a member and voting delegate of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and a commissioner-at-large for the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

His arrival at the University also marked the start of Henry's extensive involvement in civic, charitable, and human service organizations. These commitments reflect his broad interests and strong convictions and provide a model that few can equal Henry has served as an elected member of the Ann Arbor Public School Board, and as a board member of the Michigan Evaluation Resource Center, City of Ann Arbor Compensation Commission, Child and Family Service of Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor Symphony, and Kerrytown Concert House. He has also served on the steering committee of the State of Michigan Leadership 2000 Committee, and is a member of the Ann Arbor Area 2000 Committee. Currently chair of Washtenaw County United Way, over the years he has served in numerous other leadership capacities on the University of Michigan, Washtenaw County, and Michigan United Way organizations.

This dedication to the broader community made Henry Johnson the logical choice for the newly created position of vice president for community affairs, to which he was appointed in 1990. In this position, as in all of his other endeavors, Henry Johnson has demonstrated an enthusiasm, a graciousness, and an energy that have enabled those associated with him to aspire to and achieve high levels of accomplishment. Through the years, he has developed untold numbers of friends and admirers, both within and outside of the University community.

The Regents therefore extend their warm greetings and deep appreciation to Henry Johnson as he embarks on his new position with the Alumni Association.
