Mercator, the great mathematician, cartographer, globe maker, and philosopher is best known for his 1569 world map drawn on his new revolutionary projection which was the first small scale map in which a straight line on the map was a straight line on the earth. This was an important time and life saving advance for sailors. This is the last published edition of Mercator’s version of Ptolemaic maps which were based on designs attributed to Agathodaemon of Alexandria who was likely a contemporary of Claudius Ptolemy (90-168 CE).
