This poster shows three map projections: conic, mercator, and azimuthal. The text at the top of the poster reads, “Maps are not true for all purposes.” Each projection is shown in relation to the globe to illustrate the projection, then shown as a flat image. On the bottom of the map, examples of each projections distortions are shown. Of particular interest is an image that displays how the Mercator distorts relative size by comparing the actual size of Greenland to the much smaller projected size.

A black and white newsprint map of eastern United States depicting the Moral situation of the states vis-a-vis the issue of slavery. The “boundary of slavery” seperates the morally pure Northern abolitionist states from the immoral Southern slave states. The shading of the Southern states emphasizes the severity of the threat of westward expansion of slavery, particularly to the newly acquired Texas Republic.
A quote attributed to La Fayette below the map reads: “It is a dark spot on the face of the nation; such a state of things cannot always exist.”

A hand-colored map of Central New York State in 1793. Land that was previously recognized as Six Nations has been taken over and parceled out for other purposes. Only three small reservations serve as a reminder that this land was unincorporated only 20 years prior. Dispossessed of their land by colonial desire for westward expansion, the tribes of the Six Nations are confined to reservations.

A black and white map of The Six Nations territory in 1771, on the coasts of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix boundary line separates Six Nations land from the encroaching colony of New York. By mapping the recently decided boundary, this document embodies the uneasy relationship between the Six Nations and the colonists.

A reproduction copy of Blaeu’s map of New Netherlands and New England. The map, oriented west at top, shows the coast of the 1635 territories of New Netherland and New England. Images of turkeys, beavers, deer, bears, and other fur-bearing animals decorate the landscape. On the left, illustrations of Native American figures rowing canoes as well as European sailing ships populate the Atlantic Ocean (“Mar del Nord”). An illustrated cartouche features two Native American figures on either side underneath the United Netherlands heraldic coat of arms.

A large toponym that reads “Niew Vnederlandt” is emblazoned on the map. The landmass shows numerous indigenous nations that inhabited the area such as the “Mahicans” (Mohicans), “Wapanoos” (Wampanoag), and the “Sennecas” (Seneca).
