Title A name given to the resource A Bengal atlas: containing maps of the theatre of war and commerce on that side of Hindostan Description An account of the resource Rennell, began his survey of Bengal in 1764, became Surveyor General for the East India Company in 1767, and spent the next 10 years carrying out his survey of an area of about 3000,000 square miles, an area slightly larger than the state of Texas. The Bengal Atlas, first published in 1779, was the culmination of this work and was critical for commercial, military and administrative activities. Rennell’s maps were the most accurate ones of the area for the next sixty years. Our copy of the atlas bears the name Mr. Bosanquet stamped in gold on the cover. Jacob Bosanquet (d. 1828) was a director of the East India Company and served as its chairman on three occasions between 1798 and 1812. Title A name given to the resource Maps of Mughal India : drawn by Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gentil, agent for the French government to the Court of Shuja-ud-daula at Faizabad in 1770 Description An account of the resource This is a reproduction of maps drawn by Colonel Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gentil in 1770, and his maps were based on an indigenous atlas that was given to him. Gentil went to India as a French soldier in 1752 and eventually helped Mughal princes in their battles and negotiations with the British. He had a great interest in Indian painting, geography, history, and culture. The maps apparently had no effect on European cartography even though they contained more accurate political divisions and place names that were unknown to the colonial cartographers. Moleiro: The prolific Dieppe school of Northern France produced some of the atlases with the most innovative and beautiful marginalia. The Vallard Atlas, whilst ascribed to the Dieppe cartography school, has a clearly Portuguese flavour due to either its anonymous creator or the model that inspired it. Like the Atlas Miller, one of its most noteworthy characteristics are the miniatures depicting colonization scenes from the 16th century, plus countless illustrations of the daily life of the native population. The atlas starts with an introductory text on the activity of the sun, followed by a calendar. A curious aspect of this atlas is the fact that in almost all the maps the North is oriented towards the bottom of the page and the South is at the top. This was, to all appearances, a habit of Muslim cartographers but this practice was quite rare in Christian Europe. It can be seen, for example, in the various portolan charts of the atlas drawn in c. 1321 by Pedro Vesconte (Lyon, Municipal Library).
