Description
An account of the resource
A colored map of the United States with two trees superimposed over it. A straight tree labeled “God’s Blessing Liberty” originates from the Bible and extends over the Northern states from the east coast to the west. The branches of the liberty tree list positive traits that accompany the “blessing”: light, peace, joy, hope, honor, faith, truth, virtue, charity, justice, morality, sobriety, industry, free speech, knowledge, free schools, patience, happiness, benevolence, philanthropy, love of country, equal rights, obedience to law, and intelligence. The point of the tree culminates in the outcome of moral rectitude: “IMMORTALITY”.
A crooked brown tree labeled “God’s Curse Slavery” extends from the east coast and follows along the Mason Dixie line. The branches list negative traits that accompany the “curse”: treason, murder, war, rebellion, secession, sedition, superstition, ignorance, lust, avarice, the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law, the Kansas Nebraska Bill, and the Dred Scott Decision. The point of the tree culminates in the outcome of such evils: “HADES”.

States with equal suffrage are shaded black, states with no suffrage are shaded white, states with partial suffrage (municipal, school, or tax-paying) are shaded with different patterns. The map’s identification of partial suffrage gives the impression that the movement is more widespread and mobile than it truly was.

Description
An account of the resource
A colored broadside advertising presidential candidate John C. Fremont. The broadside shows a colored map of the United States displaying the status of states and territories regarding slavery. Free states are colored blue, slave states are colored yellow, and the territories now open to decide are colored pink. The territory of Kansas is shaded a darker pink to highlight its importance to the 1856 election. The Missouri Compromise line is similarly colored a stark white for the same reason.

Several of the districts possess strange shapes that evidence gerrymandering, such as District 3, 5, 11, 12, and 13 in particular. A colored map of south-eastern Michigan with congressional districts 5, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14 blocked out in green. The contorted shapes of the congressional districts are a clear example of gerrymandering.
