In revealing his and Randy Block's same-sex union ceremony, Byron Center music teacher Gerry Crane set off a firestorm of protest among parents who demanded he be fired. Despite retaining his job, Crane eventually negotiated his resignation. He died of a heart attack in early 1997 at age 32.
