Purchase of 13 Ptolemaic documentary papyri
I have spoken with Mona East and Karla Vandersypen about your proposal
that the Library try to acquire the Ptolemaic archive which is available
from M. Fackelmann of Vienna. As you state, this presents a rare opportunity,
and because we want to support Michigan's commitment to papyrological
studies, we will earmark up to $10,000 from our trust funds to purchase
this documentary papyri.
As you yourself noted in your recent letter, this is a time of financial
stringency for the University and the Library, and for financial reasons
this purchase will exhaust all Library funds which could be spent on
papyri or other ancient documents this fiscal year. If other opportunities
present themselves later this year I am afraid an alternative funding
source will have to be found.
If you think this offer is the best we are likely to receive this year,
please discuss it with Mr. Facklemann and notify Mona East or Karla
Vandersypen so that we can proceed with the purchase.
