Biography

 

GUNTER DUFEY

                                                    "GD" as he is known by friends and colleagues, is Professor Emeritus of Corporate Strategy, International Business and Finance of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI where he taught at what is now the Ross School of UoM from 1968 onward, after arriving from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA where he started in 1964 on a Fulbright Scholarship, and obtained Master and Doctorate degrees in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Intl. Business. Visiting appointments at Stanford GSB, the Hoover Institution, University of Texas, the Japanese Ministry of Finance (FAIR) and others complemented his academic experience. For many years he chaired the International Business Area at the Michigan Business School.

 

To this date he maintains close relations with a number of academic institutions in Germany such WHU Vallendar (Member Advisory Boards), Univ. des Saarlandes (Hon. Professor), und Weltwirtschaftliches Institut Kiel (Fellow). His areas of research and teaching comprise Multinational Corporate Strategy and Finance, International Financial Markets with focus on Asia, Risk Management and Corporate Governance. His academic work has been summarized in the Introduction to a Festschrift Frenkel, Hommel and Rudolf (eds.), RISK MANAGEMENT, Springer, Berlin-Heidelberg 1960

 

After being becoming Professor Emeritus of The University of Michigan Ross School he moved to Singapore, where he joined McKinsey and Co, supporting the Corporate Governance Practice of the firm in Asia. Currently he serves as Chairman of the IMA Asia CFO Forum, Singapore and has teaching assignments at the postgraduate level with Nanyang Technological University/NBS and National University Singapore, Business School.

 

Parallel to his academic career, he worked for extended periods with a number of multinational companies and government agencies as an advisor. He continues to serve on the Boards of Guinness/Atkinson, USA and a number of subsidiaries of Ally Financial (formerly GMAC) Detroit, USA and Toronto, Canada. He plays an active role in managing the portfolios of several foundations in the US and in Germany. GD is a member of FEI Detroit and the Singapore Institute of Directors. He is an advisor to FPAS and Singapore Investor Association (SIAS). In Europe he is a longterm member of the Verband Deutscher Hochschullehrer, Societe Universitaire Europeenne de Recherche Financieres (SSUERF) and Verein fuer Socialpolitik.
