This group
of papyri represents a portion of a codex (or book) that was used in
classroom instruction. What remains to us are the folded portions of
pieces of papyrus that were sewn together at the fold to form a book.
The cord that was used to bind the volume can be observed in the photo
at left. The book is a model syllabary, of the type represented by P.Mich.inv.
763. The handwriting is practiced, indicating that the book was
probably created by a teacher. In this group of papyri we have an excellent
indication of what an early textbook might have looked like.
