Criterion On Demand Streaming Films Now Available

by Jeffrey Pearson, Head of the Askwith Media Library

Criterion on Demand, a new streaming database of feature films, is now available to the UM community.

Criterion on Demand largely covers 20th Century Fox and Paramount films, and fills gaps for many films not licensed by Swank Motion Pictures. The distributor is "Criterion Pictures USA," and is not to be confused with the Criterion Collection films. There are currently over 650 films in the database, and access to these films is only available through Mirlyn.

To bring up all of the films with a Mirlyn search, go to "advanced search" and do an "all fields" search on "criterion on demand" (use the quotation marks). You can search a specific film by also searching on the title of the film.

To watch a film, click on the “available online” link under the holdings tab on the record. Off-campus and wireless users will be prompted to login with their UM username and password. You will be taken to a title screen for the film where you can choose Stream or Download, and English Audio with English Subtitles or English Audio. If you choose download you will be prompted to install a Silverlight Player. The player has DRM and the download will expire after 48 hours, but can be accessed again after that time by again choosing download. The “Stream” option is the simplest way to watch the movie.
