Rapid Assessment and Design to Support Library Services and Functions During the Pandemic

When the pandemic quickly shut down our libraries' physical spaces, in-person services, and access to many of our physical resources, the Library didn’t know when we might reopen to campus. Over the last 16 months members of the Library Environments department collaborated with Facilities and department managers and colleagues to design, create, and evaluate our pandemic-based changes to physical spaces, workflows, and onsite services.

Conducting Wayfinding Research to Improve Navigation

It’s not uncommon for academic research libraries, especially large ones, to have multiple renovations that add a wing, a floor, or even a new building. The University of Michigan Library buildings on our central campus are no exception. Our undergraduate and graduate libraries form a complex whose structure is just that. Many times a day, staff members direct visitors, patrons, or even a colleague to their intended destination.
